Speaking during the anniversary event at Times Tower, Nairobi, Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga described the authority’s journey as one of “resilience, innovation, and growth.”

From collecting Sh122 billion in the mid-1990s, KRA hit the Sh1 trillion mark in 2014/15 and by 2021/22 had doubled revenues to Sh2.03 trillion despite the pandemic. This year, collections have already surpassed Sh2.5 trillion.

Treasury CS John Mbadi assured KRA of additional government support, noting its critical role in financing education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure. Board chairman Ndiritu Muriithi praised taxpayers, staff, and development partners for their role in the milestone.

Wattanga reflected on the shift from long queues and middlemen to a technology-led model anchored on simplicity, compliance, and expanding the tax base. Among the flagship digital projects is the Gava Connect API platform, co-developed with Kenyan innovators, which uses AI, machine learning, and analytics to ease tax compliance.

In 2024/25, KRA collected Sh2.571 trillion—representing a 6.8% rise from the previous year—thanks to advanced digital tools that enhance compliance tracking, risk profiling, and revenue forecasting.

As it enters its fourth decade, the authority pledged to uphold professionalism, integrity, and partnerships while aligning reforms with the OECD’s Tax Administration 3.0 framework, which integrates compliance seamlessly into everyday business and personal life.
