Kenya Railways Warns Motorists Against Driving on Railway Tracks

Kenya Railways has issued a strong warning to motorists and the public, advising them against driving or parking along railway tracks. The corporation emphasized that such actions pose significant safety risks and are punishable by law.

In a notice released on Friday, Kenya Railways described the practice as dangerous, putting both motorists and train operations at risk.

“This behaviour jeopardizes the safety of motorists, passengers, and train operations. It could lead to severe accidents, property damage, injuries, or even fatalities,” the notice stated.

The corporation reminded the public that railway lines and reserves are strictly for train operations, and any unauthorized use constitutes an offence. Offenders will be subject to legal action, including prosecution.

To ensure public safety, Kenya Railways urged people to refrain from walking or driving on tracks and to only cross at designated crossings. They appealed for cooperation in maintaining the safety of the rail network for everyone.

The corporation also reminded road users to adhere to both traffic and railway safety regulations. For additional information, Kenya Railways provided contact details, including the numbers 0709 907 000 and 0709 907 555, or the email: info@krc.co.ke mailto:info@krc.co.ke.

The Dangers of Driving Along Railway Tracks

Driving on or near railway tracks is highly dangerous for both motorists and train operations. The risks include potential collisions with trains, which cannot quickly swerve or stop. Trains take a considerable amount of time to halt, making any vehicle on the tracks highly vulnerable to being struck.

Such collisions are often fatal, given the large size and speed of trains. Additionally, vehicles are not designed to travel on railway tracks. The wheels can become stuck in the rails or uneven ground, potentially stranding drivers on the tracks. Low-clearance vehicles are especially prone to getting caught.

The danger extends beyond vehicle damage. Driving or parking on the tracks endangers not only the driver but also passengers and pedestrians nearby. In emergencies, passengers may have little time to escape, leading to even greater risks.

Another significant risk is the disruption of train services. Unauthorized vehicles on the tracks can delay trains, affecting both passenger and cargo transport. Even a minor obstruction could force operators to stop or reroute trains, causing widespread disruptions.

In Kenya, as emphasized by Kenya Railways, driving or parking along railway tracks is illegal. Offenders face prosecution, fines, and possible imprisonment under transport and safety laws.

A collision or derailment caused by vehicles on the tracks can result in severe damage to vehicles, trains, cargo, and nearby property. Repair costs are usually high and are typically the responsibility of those at fault.

The most severe consequence of such accidents is the potential for multiple fatalities, not just for drivers but also for train passengers.
