Police said Fatuma Madnur Mohamed died on the evening of Wednesday, August 14, after triggering an explosive believed to be a remnant of war. The device reportedly landed about 100 metres from the border after being launched from Bulahawa, Somalia, where rival security forces are battling for control.

The blast severed Mohamed’s right leg and caused severe abdominal injuries, leading to her death. Her daughter sustained critical leg injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Witnesses said the victims were moved to the mortuary and hospital respectively, but security teams were slow to return to the scene due to ongoing clashes nearby. The family has called for justice.

Tensions remain high as fighting between Somali federal troops and forces loyal to Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe escalates around Bulahawa in the Gedo region. Kenyan security agencies have stepped up patrols to prevent the conflict from spilling over, though sporadic gunfire has been reported just kilometres from the border.

Efforts to calm the situation are ongoing amid fears of further casualties on both sides.
