Kenya Ready to Host CHAN Tournament, Confirms CS Mvurya

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has assured that Kenya is fully prepared to host the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), calling the event a “historic legacy” for the country.

During an inspection of Nyayo National Stadium and Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday, Mvurya expressed his satisfaction with the progress of preparations, stating that branding, logistical arrangements, and infrastructure improvements are nearly complete as the tournament approaches.

“We’ve visited both Kasarani and Nyayo, and we are in the final stages of branding and other preparations. I’m pleased with the progress—we’re on track,” said Mvurya.

The CS also confirmed that several teams have already arrived, and all signs point to a successful hosting of the competition.

“This is a historic moment. Kenya last hosted continental games in 1987,” he noted, highlighting the country’s previous bids to host major football events in 1996 and 2018, both of which did not come to fruition. “This tournament means more than football. It’s about restoring national pride and creating a lasting legacy for the nation,” Mvurya added.

Mvurya reassured the public that no stone has been left unturned in preparations, with special measures in place to welcome international delegations. These include a dedicated desk at the airport, multilingual stewards, volunteers, and a VIP lounge for distinguished guests.

“We’ve worked hard to create a welcoming atmosphere for CAF delegations and visitors. From the airport to the stadiums, we are ready,” he said.

On the medical front, Mvurya praised the support from emergency response teams, noting that 24 ambulances are on standby at both match venues and hotels. These units, supported by St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross, are prepared for any emergencies. Security personnel and NYS teams are also ready to handle any potential risks.

Looking ahead to the tournament’s opening match this weekend, Mvurya encouraged Kenyans to support the Harambee Stars as they take the field on Sunday. “

This is a chance for us to unite as a nation. Those who can’t attend the match can watch it live on KBC Channel 1,” he urged.
