In a proclamation issued Wednesday, the former president claimed that allowing foreign students at Harvard undermines U.S. interests. He accused the university of deep ties with foreign nations and violating the civil rights of its community.

Harvard strongly condemned the move, calling it “retaliatory” and vowed to defend its international students. The decision marks an escalation in an ongoing legal standoff between the university and Trump’s administration.

This action comes just days after a federal judge blocked a DHS move to bar international students from the university. Trump’s new order also instructs the State Department to consider revoking visas of currently enrolled foreign students.

The administration criticized Harvard for not providing adequate data on foreign students’ activities and claimed the university had failed to address antisemitism on campus.

Harvard has been fighting several federal actions, including a freeze on its funding and the revocation of its student visa certification, both of which were recently blocked in court.

With nearly 7,000 international students—27% of its population—Harvard now faces renewed uncertainty as legal battles continue. The suspension could be extended beyond the initial six months.

Meanwhile, the White House also threatened Columbia University’s accreditation over alleged civil rights violations related to Jewish students, amid rising tensions on campuses linked to the Gaza war protests.
