Ugandan human rights advocate Agather Atuhaire has been released by Tanzanian authorities, just a day after Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi was also freed.

According to her family and legal team, Atuhaire was dropped off near Uganda’s Mutukula border on Thursday evening.
“She’s on her way home now. She was abandoned at the Mutukula border last night—we spoke a short while ago,” a family member confirmed.
Atuhaire, affiliated with Agora Discourse, had been detained in Tanzania along with Mwangi after their presence in the country raised concerns. The two had traveled there to observe the court proceedings of prominent Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Mwangi was released earlier and left in Ukunda, south of Mombasa, by Tanzanian officials. He later recounted being subjected to severe torture during his detention and voiced deep concern for Atuhaire, whose location remained unknown at the time.
“I endured four harrowing days. I was brutally tortured and can barely walk. But I’m extremely worried about Agather—we were tortured together, and what they did to us was horrific,” Mwangi told reporters.
