In a statement issued by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), the government outlined that the ban will also extend to celebrity endorsements and influencer marketing campaigns promoting gambling activities.

The move, officials said, is aimed at curbing the misleading portrayal of gambling and shielding vulnerable populations, particularly minors, from the potential harms associated with betting promotions.

“This directive seeks to protect the public from the aggressive marketing tactics that often glamorize gambling, creating an illusion of instant wealth and success, especially among the youth,” BCLB stated.

To further strengthen the regulation of gambling activities, the government has also established a Multi-Agency Enforcement Team tasked with promoting responsible gambling practices nationwide. This team will coordinate efforts among various stakeholders to ensure compliance with the new measures and foster safer gambling environments.

Under the new rules, all gambling operators must submit their advertising materials to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for review and approval before any future publication or broadcast, even after the suspension period ends.

Authorities emphasized that stricter scrutiny would now be applied to ensure all advertising is accurate, responsible, and does not target or exploit vulnerable groups.

The BCLB has warned that any operator or media outlet that violates the suspension order risks severe penalties, including possible license revocations and legal action.

This latest crackdown reflects the government’s broader efforts to regulate the fast-growing gambling sector, which has raised concerns about addiction and financial hardship among Kenyans, particularly among young people.
