A statement from State House confirmed that the decision was based on recommendations from the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee and is in line with Article 133 of the Kenyan Constitution.
The pardon includes the conditional release of 31 inmates serving life sentences, the remission and release of 25 others, and the repatriation of a prisoner from a neighboring East African country.
Additionally, a blanket amnesty has been extended to petty offenders serving jail terms of six months or less, as well as to those with only six months remaining on longer sentences.
Chief of Staff Felix Koskei emphasized that the clemency reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to build a justice system that upholds both accountability and compassion.
