According to police reports, the clashes began when local residents, asserting ancestral ownership of the land, blocked a main road in protest to stop land surveyors from proceeding with their work.
What began as a demonstration escalated into a violent confrontation between the protesters and police, resulting in several injuries and the fatal shooting of five individuals.
During the unrest, a government vehicle used by the land officers was also vandalized by angry residents, further aggravating the situation. The vehicle, seen as a representation of state intervention in the land issue, became a flashpoint for the community’s anger.
Narok Deputy Governor Tomalinye Koech condemned the killings, demanding accountability and an end to what he described as violent land grabs.
“Why are our people being killed in Angata? We’ve lost lives this morning. Who gave the orders? This forced land takeover must stop—63 years after independence, it’s unacceptable,” Koech stated in a strongly worded social media post.

He further criticized the process, suggesting that individuals meant to help resolve historical land injustices might have personal interests in the disputed land.
In response to the violence, local elders have stepped in to mediate, urging both residents and government officials to prioritize dialogue and non-violence in resolving the conflict.
Authorities are also working to assist the families of those who were killed or injured, as the situation on the ground remains volatile. Law enforcement and community leaders are calling for calm and restraint.
