He urged the public to ignore these claims, reaffirming that the minimum entry grade remains C+, and that all 246,391 students who achieved this grade in the 2024 KCSE results are eligible for university admission.

“The government has not altered the policy regarding the university admission cut-off point. It still remains C+ and above,” he stated in a Thursday announcement.

The C+ grade has long been the standard for joining public universities.

This policy change followed the Ministry of Education’s decision to lower the previous minimum mean grades required for admission, which were B- (58 points) for females and B (60 points) for males.

The Education CS also noted that the portal used by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for the September intake applications will open in March.

“The KUCCPS portal has been open since January 24 for the placement of applicants to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Teacher Training Colleges, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions for the March and May 2025 intakes,” he added.

Additionally, Ogamba provided clarity on the government’s projected funding for the university education of the 2024 cohort.

He explained that if all eligible students join university, the government will spend Sh25.8 billion annually to fund their education, contrary to reports suggesting the cost would be Sh100 billion.

“The Sh100 billion projection is the total estimated cost over a four-year period,” CS Ogamba clarified.

A total of 962,512 candidates sat for the 2024 KCSE exams, an increase from 899,453 in 2023. Of these, 480,310 were male, and 482,202 were female.

Ogamba confirmed that all the candidates are cleared to join various higher learning institutions to pursue their chosen careers.
