Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has officially handed over a newly constructed, fully furnished house to Meshack Ojwang, the father of the late Albert Ojwang, in Kokwanyo village, Homa Bay.

The new home replaces the deteriorating structure Albert had long wished to improve for his parents.
The former house, with its faded maroon walls, rusted iron sheets, and limited space, stood as a symbol of years of wear and tear.
The new residence, built under the Homa Bay County Government’s initiative, is a modern, three-bedroom home with a thoughtful design.
Finished with warm peach-coloured walls, white window and roofline trims, and a vibrant red gable-style metal roof, the house presents a neat and polished appearance.
Large, secure windows framed with metal allow ample natural light into the home, while the front features a tiled veranda with sturdy support columns, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
“This was Albert’s dream—to build his parents a new home—and though he is not here to witness it, his dream has now come true,” Governor Wanga said during the handover ceremony. “May justice prevail.”
The construction was completed within just two and a half weeks following Governor Wanga’s visit to the Ojwang family on June 16, where she pledged to have the house ready before Albert’s burial, at a cost of Sh1.5 million.
“I promised to build a three-bedroom house so that Mzee can have a dignified place to call home,” Wanga stated. “Visitors will come, mourn, and leave, but Mzee deserves a better place to live.”
The county government also ensured electricity was connected to the home by June 17, with additional plans in place to install a water point for the Ojwang family and the local community.
Albert Ojwang’s death drew national outrage after he was arrested in Homa Bay while visiting his parents and later transferred to Nairobi by DCI officers, where he died in custody under mysterious circumstances.
His death sparked widespread protests and demands for justice.
Despite the grief and unanswered questions surrounding his passing, a significant part of Albert’s dream for his family has now been fulfilled.
