Vihiga County Unveils New Policy to Combat Gender-Based Violence

Vihiga County has introduced new policies to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and protect children, aiming to improve the well-being of these vulnerable groups.

Anne Desma, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Social Services, Sports, and Culture, explained that these policies establish a legal framework to address the widespread issues of gender-based abuse, as well as prevent child neglect, abandonment, and abuse.

Desma emphasized the county’s commitment to working with partners and stakeholders to ensure that offenders face consequences, while victims receive justice. She highlighted the importance of a multisectoral approach to create a thorough, accessible, and sustainable campaign to protect children from predators and tackle gender-related abuse.

“The county administration will ensure that citizens are aware of their rights and know how to seek justice if they are wronged,” she stated during the event at the county headquarters in Vihiga.

Florence Sitawa, the Acting County Commissioner, urged the community to join forces in advocating against gender-based violence. She also discouraged informal resolutions of such issues, as they often allow perpetrators to avoid justice while denying victims their rights.
