The Archdiocese of Nairobi, led by His Grace Most Rev. Philip Anyolo, has announced with deep sorrow the death of Reverend Father Joseph Mokaya, who passed away at Mater Hospital on the night of January 27, 2026.
Fr. Mokaya, a priest of the Nairobi Archdiocese, was ordained on June 28, 1975, at Our Lady of Visitation, Makadara, and dedicated more than four decades to serving the Church with passion and commitment.

During his ministry, he served in numerous parishes, including Mangu Parish (Gatundu North), Riruta Parish, St. Joseph Parish Jericho, Ruku Parish (Lower Kabete), Ndundu Parish (Gatundu South), St. Mary Magdalene Parish Kariokor, Nyamangara Parish (Gatundu North), and Blessed Sacrament Parish Buruburu.
Beyond parish work, Fr. Mokaya also contributed as a formator at St. Mathias Mulumba Senior Seminary in Tindinyo, mentoring future priests, and worked with the AMECEA Secretariat in Nairobi. He played a key role during the 43rd International Eucharistic Congress held in Nairobi.
Fr. Mokaya pursued advanced theological studies, earning Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Sacred Theology from the University of Nairobi, Duquesne University (USA), and Rome.
At the time of his passing, he was serving at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish in Buruburu, Nairobi.
Archbishop Anyolo offered prayers for Fr. Mokaya’s soul and extended condolences to his family, parishioners, and all who were impacted by his ministry, stating: “May the soul of Fr. Joseph Mokaya rest in peace.”
Fr. Mokaya’s decades of devoted service have left an enduring legacy within the Nairobi Archdiocese and the wider Catholic community.
