The moment caused a short pause in the proceedings, with the preacher resuming after the former president settled.
The burial has attracted a host of political leaders, relatives, and community members who gathered to honour Jirongo, remembering him for his role in public service and as a family man. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is also among the dignitaries present.
Jirongo passed away on December 13 following a tragic road accident at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, where his private vehicle collided head-on with a passenger bus from Nairobi. He was 64 years old.
Postmortem results indicated that he died from severe blunt force injuries to the chest and abdomen, with additional trauma to the spine and legs.
The autopsy was conducted at Lee Funeral Home in the presence of both the family pathologist, Dr Joseph Ndung’u, and Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Ahead of the burial, Jirongo’s body was taken to his Kitale residence on Sunday for an overnight vigil under tight security.
Several security teams were later deployed to Lumakanda, where elders identified the burial site next to the graves of his parents and elder brother.
Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, together with senior security officials, made several visits to the home to oversee preparations.
“We have worked closely with friends and the government to ensure he is accorded a dignified send-off because he was deeply loved across the country,” Nabwera said.
