Police officers and rescue teams have since been deployed to assess the situation and evacuate residents living in high-risk zones to safer areas.

The latest tragedy comes just days after deadly mudslides in Kerio Valley claimed 26 lives and left over 30 others injured.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich said his administration, together with national government agencies, is conducting an assessment across the county following the ongoing heavy rains.

“We are deeply affected and saddened by the latest and previous mudslide incidents in our county. We are working closely with all relevant agencies to ensure the safety of our people,” Governor Rotich said.

The new incident occurred a few kilometres from Iten town, near the Singore area. Meanwhile, a multi-agency rescue operation continues in Kerio Valley, where about 26 people remain missing.

Several victims from earlier landslides are still receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret after being airlifted from the affected villages.

Aerial footage of the region shows widespread destruction across more than 10 villages in three wards, with at least 800 families affected and hundreds displaced. The worst-hit areas include Kamogo, Mkeno, Moror, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, Chechan, Kabetwo, Mogil, and Kepkener, spread across Embobut, Sambirir, Endo, and Ariti wards.

Embobut MCA Paul Kipyatich said the destruction was devastating.

“We are deeply shaken as a community. The losses are huge, but we are grateful to the national government and everyone who came to help,” he said.

Residents described the event as one of the most catastrophic in memory.

“Death struck us without warning. Many families lost everything — homes, livestock, and livelihoods. We’ll have to start life afresh,” said Janet Jebet, a resident.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed that rescue and recovery efforts continue until all the missing persons are found.

He also urged residents living along the escarpments and other high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas as the government works on long-term measures to prevent further tragedies.

Murkomen assured that all affected families will receive government support, including medical care and assistance with burial expenses.
