A devastating accident early Sunday morning left three people dead and eight others injured after a speeding vehicle plowed into a police-led rescue operation at Chuma, about three kilometers from Kinangop Police Station.

A police report (OB No. 02/15/06/2025) indicated that the incident occurred at around 1:20 am while officers from Kinangop Police Station and the Traffic Department were attending to an earlier motorcycle crash.
As police and members of the public worked to aid victims of the earlier accident, a speeding silver Isuzu D-Max pickup (registration KBT 522N) heading from Engineer toward Njabini slammed into a stationary police Land Cruiser (registration GKB 679T) and a parked lorry, injuring those at the scene.
Among the deceased were Sgt. Dickson Kilonzo, Constable Gilbert Makori, and the driver of the pickup, Ben Wakivi. Eight others sustained various injuries and were rushed to North Kinangop Mission Hospital.
Those injured include:
- Edwin Mungai Kamau, Assistant Inspector General at DCI HQ, with a fractured left leg
- Cpl Hesbon Mwangi, head injuries
- Cpl Abdi Hassan, chest pain
- Cpl Boniface Libuthi, leg injury
- Lucy Nyambura Wanjiku (20), leg injury
- Peter Macharia Karanja (47), body pain
- Daniel Kibebo Wainoga (28), leg injury
- Dominic Waweru (30), fractured leg
The deceased were taken to Engineer Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa described the incident as a tragic loss and assured the public of a comprehensive investigation.
“This is a terrible loss of life involving committed officers and innocent citizens. We are investigating the cause thoroughly,” he said.
Nyandarua County Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed the accident and stated that a team including the Sub-County Police Commander, DCI, Traffic Base Commander, and crime scene experts documented the incident.
The Traffic Base Commander is leading the ongoing probe.
Authorities have pledged transparency and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
