Tanzanians Head to the Polls as Samia Suluhu Seeks Second Term

Tanzanians are voting today in the General Elections of the United Republic of Tanzania, where President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party is expected to defend her position for another five-year term.

It is the seventh election since the restoration of the multi-party system in 1992, and it is taking place at a time when the main opposition parties have different positions regarding their participation in this process.

The main opposition party, CHADEMA, is not participating in the elections, pushing for changes to the electoral system, claiming it favors the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the ACT-Wazalendo party does not have a presidential candidate after Luhaga Mpina was disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not meeting the constitutional requirements.

According to INEC, polling stations open at 1:00 am and will close at 10:00 pm before the start of the counting exercise immediately after the conclusion of voting.

Yesterday, residents of the Zanzibar islands cast their votes early for special groups including soldiers, commission officials and health workers. The commission said all preparations are complete and urged voters to arrive at polling stations early to avoid congestion.
