Starbucks Hotel Among Five Upscale Establishments Shut Down Amid Alcohol Crackdown

In Karatina town, Nyeri, five prominent hotels have been closed as part of an intensified crackdown on alcoholism. The closures come just a day after President William Ruto’s visit to the county, where he reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating alcohol and substance abuse.

The affected establishments include the renowned Hotel Starbucks, Omega Gardens, Oldoiyo Hotel, The Big Club, and Ibis Hotel. Additionally, Seven Eleven Lounge and Derby Place, situated in close proximity to churches, schools, and residential areas, have also been shuttered.

Over the past three weeks, the government has tightened its enforcement measures on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the region, particularly in Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s constituency. More than 400 bars have been closed due to their close proximity to educational institutions and places of worship.

However, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga raised concerns about the selective application of regulations aimed at combating alcoholism. He alleged discrimination against Mathira constituency by certain “overzealous” national government administrative officials.

Wamatinga questioned the disregard for a court order allowing the affected operators to resume business after successfully petitioning the High Court to overturn the government’s revocation of their liquor licenses.

“I have questioned the Nyeri County commissioner about the selective enforcement of the law. While we acknowledge the problem of alcoholism and support government efforts to address it, these actions should be implemented gradually. Abrupt closures of all bars without due process are not the solution,” he remarked.
