Sh8 per Km on Rironi–Mau Summit Rd? Here’s How to Use the Free Option Instead

The government has confirmed that motorists who prefer not to pay toll charges on the upcoming Rironi–Mau Summit expressway will have a free alternative route.

This follows the selection of a consortium led by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to finance, build, and operate the 175-kilometre Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) highway under a 30-year concession.

The expressway, expected to open in 2028, will charge motorists Sh8 per kilometre—an amount set to rise by one percent annually. However, the existing A8 road will remain toll-free, ensuring that road users retain a choice between the free and premium routes.

KeNHA emphasized that maintaining toll-free options was a key condition for project approval. The parallel Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8 South) road will also be upgraded to dual carriageway status while remaining toll-free, providing additional alternatives for non-paying travellers.

The new expressway will feature eight toll stations, including two along the Maai Mahiu stretch, and incorporate modern safety measures for fog-prone and steep areas, along with improved drainage and lighting.

Costing an estimated Sh180 billion, the project will operate on a public–private partnership model, with investors bearing both traffic and revenue risks—meaning taxpayers will not compensate for potential revenue shortfalls.

The expressway is designed to reduce travel time between Nairobi and the western region by several hours, featuring a 4.5-kilometre viaduct through Nakuru town to ease congestion.

Authorities say the dual-option system balances affordability and efficiency—allowing those who can pay to enjoy faster, safer travel while keeping free access open to all.

Before construction begins in 2026, the consortium will complete detailed environmental studies, finalize cost structures, and outline how free alternative routes will integrate into the broader transport network.

The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs, support local businesses, and enhance road safety during and after construction.

Negotiations are ongoing on tax issues, land compensation, toll collection systems, and risk management measures ahead of final approval.
