Senator Mutinda Blames Surge in Murders on Youth’s Money Obsession

Senator Tabitha Mutinda attributes the increasing murders of young women to their excessive focus on material wealth.

The nominated senator expressed concern about a concerning trend among the younger generation, emphasizing their engagement in transactional romantic relationships.

This concern comes in the wake of a surge in reported cases of murder targeting Kenyan women, particularly in private settings under unclear circumstances. One recent case involved the tragic death of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni Muendo, whose dismembered body was found in a residential apartment in Nairobi’s Roysambu area.

Senator Mutinda pointed out that the younger generation’s obsession with money and a lavish lifestyle is driving them to take risks in pursuing relationships with strangers who they believe can financially support their lifestyle. She highlighted a perceived societal shift, where young individuals, after completing their education, are embracing a lifestyle she referred to as the “socialite or slay queen” culture.

According to the senator, these young women are driven by a desire for wealth and possessions, engaging in what they consider business transactions with men to fund their desired lifestyle. Mutinda urged parents to be vigilant, monitoring their children’s movements and questioning the sources of their money and possessions if anything suspicious arises.

While acknowledging technology’s role in changing social interactions, Mutinda argued that the core issue lies in the erosion of society’s moral values rather than technological advancements. She criticized the police for what she perceived as a lack of responsiveness to reports of abuse, highlighting the need for firm handling of such cases.

Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, also participating in the discussion, attributed the risky pursuits of young people to social media pressure. He emphasized the importance of parents guiding their children and urged the police to take decisive action against perpetrators to deter others.

The discussion also touched on recent cases, including the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu, where the police were criticized for alleged negligence. The family of Rita Muendo reported receiving a ransom demand before her tragic death.

A foreign national was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on suspicion of involvement in the murder, but the police are yet to confirm his connection to the crime. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations suggested a possible serial sexual offender linked to a criminal ring targeting women through dating sites and social media.

In response, the government issued a directive requiring guests at accommodations to surrender identification documents during their stay.
