Governor Sakaja, who was expected to brief Senators on the progress and challenges of ECDE and VTC programmes, cancelled his attendance at the last minute, prompting criticism from committee members.

Senators described his no-show as disrespectful to the House and an affront to its oversight role. Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu called for enforcement of penalties under Senate Standing Orders, while Kajiado Senator Seki Ole Kanar urged the House to take firm legal action.

Nominated Senator Margaret Kamar stressed the importance of accountability, noting that summoning the Governor falls squarely within the Committee’s mandate. Laikipia Senator John Kinyua emphasized that the Constitution grants the Committee authority to demand Sakaja’s appearance.

Lawmakers reminded the Governor that Nairobi, as Kenya’s capital, is expected to lead by example in implementing devolved education services.

They insisted he must face the Senate and provide a detailed account of budget use, staffing, infrastructure, and the overall status of ECDE and TVET institutions in the county.
