Australian scientists have discovered a new species of native bee with a small hornet – and named it the devil.
Researchers discovered the ‘Megachile Lucifer’ bee while observing a rare wildflower that grows exclusively in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, 470km (292mi) east of Perth.
“The bee’s horns” are found only on female bees and can be used as a means of self-defense, to collect pollen or nectar, or to gather materials such as resin for nests.
The lead scientist for the study said he was drawn to the name ‘Satan’ while watching a Netflix show with the same name at the time.
He added that there has been a completely new species of bee in the past 20 years.
