President William Ruto has led Kenyans in congratulating 17-year-old Edmund Serem after he claimed a bronze medal in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Serem, the World U-20 steeplechase champion, clocked 8:34.56 to secure his first senior global medal in a dramatic race that delivered one of the championship’s biggest surprises. His performance added to Kenya’s medal tally.

“We salute 17-year-old Edmund Serem for clinching a bronze medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. With such rising talent, Kenya’s future in athletics is secure,” President Ruto said in his congratulatory message.
Other leaders also praised Serem. Health CS Aden Duale described him as the hope of the next generation, while Interior PS Raymond Omollo said his success proves Kenya’s athletics heritage is in safe hands.
Elsewhere, 2020 Olympic silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot advanced to the men’s 1,500m final after finishing fourth in his semifinal heat with a time of 3:35.61. In the same event, 2022 World U-20 champion Reynold Cheruiyot booked a spot in the final after winning Heat Two in 3:36.64.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Wiseman Were progressed to the semifinals with a time of 48.27, qualifying as one of the fastest losers.

New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish shocked reigning Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali in the 3,000m steeplechase final, winning gold in 8:33.88 ahead of the Moroccan’s 8:33.95. Kenya’s Olympic bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwott failed to finish the race.
