Prison Officer ‘Cop Shakur’ Charged with Publishing False Information

Jackson Kuria Kihara, also known as Cop Shakur, a prison officer previously suspended for participating in the anti-Finance Bill protests in June 2023, has been formally charged with publishing false information.

Shakur appeared before Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, where he denied the charge. He was subsequently released on a cash bail of Ksh. 50,000.

The prosecution alleges that Shakur committed the offense on January 11, 2025. He was arrested on January 15 and brought to court the following day, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) requesting his detention for 21 days to allow for further investigation into several accusations against him.

Shakur, a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, gained prominence during the Gen Z protests and has been a fierce opponent of the current government’s policies.
