The late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has posthumously received Kenya’s highest state honour, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), awarded by President William Ruto during the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
A gazette notice issued on October 20, 2025, confirmed the conferment of the First Class C.G.H. to Raila, citing his “exemplary courage, endurance, dedication, unwavering commitment to democracy and good governance, sacrifice, Pan-Africanism, and faithful service to humanity.”

In his Mashujaa Day address, President Ruto paid glowing tribute to the late opposition leader, describing him as “a towering patriot and hero for the ages.”
“The Government and people of Kenya inscribe Hon. Raila Odinga’s name among the foremost of our heroes, under the public seal of the Republic,” the President said.
Ruto urged Kenyans to live by Raila’s example, noting that his love for the nation and selfless service should inspire future generations.
“If we, the people he so deeply loved, choose to live by the lessons he taught us — to love Kenya more than ourselves, to put unity above division, and to serve with courage and conviction — then we can become a nation of 50 million heroes,” he added.
The honour comes just a day after Raila was laid to rest at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, following his death on October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, India.
His body was flown back to Kenya on October 16, where he was accorded a state funeral attended by dignitaries from across Africa and beyond, marking the final farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential and enduring political figures.
