At Least 6 Dead in Nairobi Flash Floods After Heavy Rains, Officials Report

At least six people have died in Nairobi following intense rains on Monday night, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise as more bodies may have been carried away by floodwaters.

In one tragic incident, a mother and her two children were killed when a large boulder crushed their home in the Mathare area. According to police, the boulder fell on the victims in the Mathare 4a informal settlement, after heavy rains caused a nearby river to overflow, weakening the house structure and triggering the rock collapse as the family slept.

Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirmed the deaths, stating that the family drowned when their home was destroyed by the falling boulder.

Search and rescue teams have been dispatched to find any survivors, and local authorities have started evacuating residents in flood-prone areas and those living near unstable rocks.

In another part of the city, a person in the Mukuru Kwa Reuben slums was swept away by the floods and died, while more than 500 people were displaced by the rising waters.

Two additional bodies were recovered from separate locations in Nairobi after being carried away by the floods. One was found in the Ngong River near Likoni Bridge in South B, and the other was retrieved from floodwaters along Jogoo Road.

Residents in the Mukuru slums have expressed frustration, claiming that despite previous promises, their concerns about flood risks have been largely ignored.

Rescue teams are continuing to monitor flood-affected areas, with some places requiring immediate attention. The county government has mobilized crews to clear blocked drains and assist with flood relief efforts.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted continued rain and thunderstorms throughout the week, with widespread rainfall across much of the country.
