“Ramadan represents faith, sacrifice, and compassion—values that build individual character and strengthen the bonds that unite humanity.”

He urged the faithful to remember the country in their prayers.

“In this spirit, I humbly ask you to include our nation in your supplications, as we continue together with mutual respect, solidarity, and a commitment to the common good,” he added.

Ruto also wished for spiritual growth and blessings during the month. “May this blessed period bring spiritual development and abundant blessings to every Muslim family in Kenya. Ramadan Kareem.”

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed with fasting from dawn to dusk, increased charity, and heightened devotion. Its start is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon and may vary between countries and communities.

Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is regarded as an act of worship to attain piety and demonstrate submission to God. This year, Ramadan coincided with the Christian season of Lent, highlighting how religious calendars shift annually.

Ahead of the month, the government eased the burden on the faithful by allowing duty-free importation of dates, a measure expected to support families observing the fast and encourage the spirit of charity.

The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims welcomed the initiative, with chairman Hassan Ole Naado stressing gratitude as a central Islamic value: “He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah.”

He emphasized that recognising goodwill and positive actions is key to faith and community harmony during the sacred month.
