Police in Thika shot and killed a suspected robber early Saturday morning while responding to a gang attempting to vandalize a transformer in the Kang’oki area.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when a group of seven had already cut off power to the area.
Thika police chief Lawrence Muchangi confirmed that the suspects engaged with officers, leading to the shooting of one suspect on the scene. The other gang members fled, reportedly injured by gunfire.
Muchangi encouraged local medical facilities to notify them of any patients seeking treatment for gunshot wounds as part of their effort to track down the remaining suspects.
Dominic Thuo, Chief Security Officer for Kenya Power in the North Eastern region, noted that transformer thefts have caused significant losses, with around 25 units stolen in Kiambu County in the last six months, amounting to approximately Ksh.25 million.
Nduto commended the police for their swift action and highlighted the importance of community involvement in reporting vandalism, urging residents to stay alert and help combat the increasing thefts targeting critical infrastructure.
