Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, commemorates the martyrdom of Saint Valentine, a Christian bishop known for conducting marriages for forbidden couples. Various accounts suggest he was imprisoned for ministering to persecuted Christians during the Roman Empire’s reign in the third century.
According to History Classics, legends also narrate that Valentine may have been executed for assisting Christians in escaping harsh Roman prisons, where they faced torture. One story even claims that Valentine, during his imprisonment, sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting after falling in love with a young girl, possibly his jailor’s daughter, who visited him.
