Partners Collaborate to Improve Menstrual Hygiene in Turkana

A collective effort among various partners in Turkana County is underway to address menstrual hygiene challenges faced by vulnerable women and girls.

In a special initiative named “Pads for Love,” at least 700 students from Kataboi Girls Secondary School in Turkana North Sub-County were provided with sanitary towels and soaps to promote menstrual hygiene. The generosity extended to Kataboi Junior Secondary School as well.

Among the contributors, SAPCONE donated 40 dignity kits to high-performing students, emphasizing their commitment to supporting education.

The event, spearheaded by the Arsenal Kenya Turkana Branch and supported by a consortium including the Ministry of Health Turkana County, Amref USAID ImarishaJamii, KDII, PanAfricare Kenya, and SAPCONE, among others, aimed to tackle the lack of adequate menstrual hygiene facilities and the prohibitive cost of sanitary products.

Speaking on the importance of addressing menstrual hygiene needs, County Solicitor General Ruth Emanikor highlighted that it’s not only a health matter but also essential for upholding human dignity and gender equality.

Principal Omaido Robella expressed gratitude for the donations, emphasizing the significance for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

During mentorship sessions, EchamiAito ladies encouraged girls to excel in their studies and aspire for greatness.

The initiative aligns with the Basic Education Amendment Act in Kenya, which mandates the government to provide free, sufficient, and quality dignity kits to reduce school absenteeism among girls during menstruation.

Solicitor General Emanikor emphasized discipline, commitment, and teamwork, emphasizing that confidence derived from proper menstrual hygiene can empower girls to achieve their dreams.

Arsenal Kenya Turkana Branch Fan base, a charitable organization formed in 2019, has played a pivotal role in supporting vulnerable communities through various initiatives, including menstrual hygiene support.

With girls often resorting to makeshift materials due to socio-economic challenges, collaborative efforts are crucial in ensuring their health, dignity, and educational opportunities are upheld.
