Over 2,000 Laikipia Homes Benefit from Clean Energy Stove Project

Clean cooking jikos have been distributed to more than 2,000 households in Laikipia, courtesy of the government’s efforts to promote energy efficiency and reduce harmful emissions. The initiative, part of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum’s Accelerating Clean Cooking Access (ACCA) project, aims to advocate for cleaner cooking fuels to mitigate health and environmental risks associated with traditional cooking methods.

During the distribution event in Nanyuki, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira highlighted the government’s plan to distribute a total of 4.5 million stoves to vulnerable communities nationwide. He emphasized the importance of clean cooking in improving health outcomes and addressing environmental concerns, noting that traditional cooking methods contribute to respiratory diseases, heart problems, and adverse effects on climate change.

Wachira underscored the role of clean cooking in supporting the national goal of planting 10 billion trees by 2032, emphasizing the need to reduce reliance on wood fuel to protect natural resources. The Japanese government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Kenya’s climate change efforts, pledging financial assistance of Sh208.6 million for clean cooking initiatives.

Nishimura Masaya, Second Secretary at the Japanese Embassy, highlighted the collaborative nature of addressing climate change and commended Kenya’s ambitious tree planting goals. He reiterated Japan’s support for promoting environmental sustainability and emphasized the project’s focus on improving livelihoods and creating employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth involved in briquette production.

Masaya emphasized Japan’s active contribution to Kenya’s climate change mitigation efforts, citing ongoing technical cooperation projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating climate change and expressed confidence in Kenya’s commitment to securing a greener future for its citizens.
