Machakos: Family Demands Answers as Man Dies in Tala Police Custody

A man in his middle age was discovered deceased in a police cell in Tala on Friday, sparking numerous inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death. Following this, authorities transferred the body to Kangundo Hospital Mortuary, without prior notification to the deceased’s family or next of kin.

The deceased, identified as Julius Mutuku Ngomoli from Kiliku village, Kyaume sub-location, Tala location, had been apprehended by Assistant Chief Kyaume Ancent Musembi three days earlier on suspicion of bean theft. Ngomoli was scheduled to appear in court for plea-taking on Friday morning but tragically passed away in his cell later that evening. Sources within the police station suggest that he might have taken his own life by hanging using a belt.

Tala MCA Jackson Ndaka was alerted to the situation while in Tala and hurried to the station with approximately 15 individuals. Upon arrival, they discovered the station in darkness, and a police Land Cruiser positioned at the entrance, seemingly preparing to transport the body to Kangundo Mortuary. Ndaka confronted the OCS Tala regarding the sudden removal, but received no response.

Accompanied by several Tala residents, Ndaka pursued the police Land Cruiser, emphasizing that the body should not be removed without confirmation from a relative.

Ndaka urged Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to overhaul the station’s officers, highlighting instances of prolonged service and even engagement in private ventures.

Upon inspecting the body, Patrick Ngomoli, the deceased’s brother, observed signs of physical trauma, raising further concerns. He expressed frustration over the lack of communication regarding the suspect’s arrest and subsequent demise.

Both the Tala MCA and the family members who viewed the body expressed suspicions of physical abuse and torture within the police cells, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The deceased, aged 36, was the youngest of 11 siblings in his family.
