Tahmeed, Latema, Meru Nissan Hit Hard as NTSA Suspends 62 Drivers

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the licences of 62 Public Service Vehicle drivers after a recent compliance audit revealed widespread safety violations.

The affected drivers, drawn from seven transport firms, must undergo mandatory re-testing before returning to service. NTSA said the move is part of its heightened efforts to improve road safety, especially during the festive travel season.

Tahmeed Express Limited recorded the highest number of suspensions with 23 drivers, followed by Latema Travelers Bus and Safari Company Limited with 13. Meru Nissan Operators Sacco had 10 drivers suspended, MTrans Sacco Limited had 7, Moline Prestige Services Shuttle Limited had 6, and Enabled Mashariki Investment Limited had 3.

NTSA has ordered the involved operators to conduct road safety sensitisation for all their drivers and present selected vehicles for inspection. The authority said these measures are intended to boost compliance and ensure all PSV drivers meet required competency standards.

NTSA warned that more operators remain under review and that enforcement actions will continue as part of broader efforts to reduce road crashes.

Between January 1 and October 22, 2025, NTSA recorded 3,890 road fatalities—higher than the 3,805 deaths reported in the same period last year. Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users remain the most affected.

Acting director general Angele Wanjira said the agency is stepping up preventive strategies under the Safe System Approach, including enhanced roadside checks, public awareness campaigns, and greater collaboration with police.

She added that NTSA is enforcing the use of the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS), which tracks vehicles in real time and flags risky driver behaviour for follow-up action.
