According to data from the Affordable Housing Board, most applicants are targeting projects located in urban areas with access to essential infrastructure, including roads, electricity, water, schools, markets and healthcare services.
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said the milestone demonstrates growing public confidence in the Affordable Housing Programme.
“The fact that one million Kenyans are saving towards owning a home is a clear sign of trust in the programme,” Hinga said.
Despite the surge in registrations, the number of housing units currently under development remains significantly lower. About 262,913 affordable housing units are under construction across 47 counties and 111 constituencies.
Government officials say the widening gap between demand and supply underscores the need to accelerate construction as the affordable housing initiative is rolled out across the country.
