A fatal road accident in Machakos County has left one woman dead and two others critically injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the car was heading from Matuu toward Kithimani when the crash happened. One of the female passengers died at the scene and remained trapped in the wreckage for hours.

“The injured have been taken to a private hospital in Kithimani Town, while efforts to retrieve the deceased woman’s body are ongoing,” an eyewitness told media.

Local residents teamed up with police officers in the rescue operation. By the time of reporting, the car remained submerged in the canal.

This tragedy came just hours after another fatal accident on Saturday along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway at the Athi River interchange, where three people were killed after their truck hit a wall.

Eyewitnesses said the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a barrier near Shalom Community Hospital. All three occupants – the driver and two passengers – died on the spot due to the impact.

Officers from Athi River Police Station transported the bodies to the mortuary, and the damaged truck was towed for further investigation. Members of the public assisted in recovering the bodies from the crushed vehicle.

The weekend accidents followed another fatality three days earlier on Namanga Road near KCB in Kitengela, Kajiado County, where a man was knocked down by a speeding vehicle.

On July 15, a lorry accident in Kitengela also claimed the lives of a mother and her child who were riding on a motorcycle. Angry residents torched the lorry after the incident. The driver, who sustained serious injuries from a mob attack, was hospitalized, while the boda boda rider fled the scene.

Isinya Subcounty Police Commander Simon Lokitari confirmed the incident and said he had engaged Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials on public concerns.

KeNHA has since begun installing road signs at the black spot and is considering erecting speed bumps to improve safety.
