Kipchumba Murkomen, President William Ruto’s nominee for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration (MINA), has expressed his commitment to serving the nation with “honour and dignity” following his reassignment to the crucial role.
Murkomen, who was previously the Cabinet Secretary for Transport before briefly holding the Sports docket, thanked President Ruto for the opportunity to lead the Interior Ministry and vowed to advance the Kenya Kwanza administration’s national security agenda.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for this incredible opportunity to serve our great nation in this capacity,” Murkomen said in a statement. “In keeping with my oath of office, I undertake to serve with honour and dignity and to perform the functions of my office to the best of my ability.”
This appointment is part of a broader Cabinet reshuffle aimed at improving government performance under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Announced by State House Chief of Staff Felix Koskei on Thursday evening, the reshuffle seeks to realign ministries, state departments, and the Foreign Service to enhance public service delivery.
Murkomen succeeds Kithure Kindiki, who now serves as the Deputy President. In other notable changes, former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has been appointed to lead the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, replacing Dr. Andrew Karanja, who has been appointed as Ambassador to Brazil.
Former Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui will now head the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, while former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo takes over the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, succeeding Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, who has been appointed High Commissioner to Ghana.
Additionally, Salim Mvurya has been reassigned to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, and several new faces have joined the Cabinet.
In foreign affairs, Ababu Namwamba has been named Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), while Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u will serve as the High Commissioner to Ghana.
There were also appointments in state corporations, with former Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi appointed as Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority Board. Anthony Mwaura will now lead the Kenya Rural Roads Authority, and Kembi Gitura has been named Chairperson of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital Board.
Koskei confirmed that all the appointments have been submitted to the National Assembly for approval, in accordance with legal requirements. He emphasized that the reshuffles and appointments reflect President Ruto’s commitment to aligning government operations with the needs of the Kenyan people.
