Motorists to Hit New Dual Carriageway in August, CS Chirchir Reveals

Motorists are expected to begin using the first phase of the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway in August, as construction of the Rironi–Naivasha stretch nears completion, which is projected for June.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir informed the Senate that work on the Rironi–Naivasha section is almost complete, paving the way for its opening to traffic in August.

The multi-billion-shilling expansion has been split into two major segments. The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), working alongside the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), is overseeing the Nairobi–Naivasha–Gilgil and Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8 South) sections.

Meanwhile, Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International (SDRBI) is responsible for the Gilgil–Mau Summit portion.

Upon completion, drivers will be charged Sh8 per kilometre on the new dual carriageway — a reduction from the previously proposed Sh10 rate. The 175-kilometre Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit corridor is estimated to cost approximately Sh90 billion and is slated for full completion by June 2027.
