In Embakasi Sub-County, police have apprehended Wycliffe Barongo Nyabuti, who is accused of fatally stabbing his 16-year-old stepdaughter, Joy, in Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
Barongo faces allegations of repeatedly raping the teenager before killing her on Sunday. The suspect’s wife revealed that he had purchased the knife used in the crime two weeks earlier.
Reports indicate that Barongo inflicted multiple stab wounds on Joy, targeting her stomach, hands, and chest. The motive for this violent act remains unclear, though it is suspected that Barongo feared being exposed for his alleged abuse of the victim.
The girl’s mother, Regina Nkatha, expressed her grief, saying, “He stabbed her twice in the stomach, once in the hand, and four times in the chest. She died around 5 PM, and we took her to the mortuary.”
Regina had long suspected inappropriate behavior from Barongo but never anticipated such a tragic outcome. “I had sensed he had an unhealthy interest in my daughter and had warned him to change his ways or I would remove my daughter from the home,” she said.
Barongo reportedly attacked Joy after the family had left for church, turning up the TV volume to muffle her cries. Joy was found in her church clothes, covered in blood, according to her aunt, Mary Gacheri.
A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, described hearing disturbing noises and encountering Barongo with a knife after the attack. “I heard screaming and when I went to check, Barongo pointed a knife at me. I saw the girl lying on the floor, and he did not speak to me,” the neighbor recounted.
Despite prior concerns about her stepfather’s behavior, Joy’s mother did not expect such a violent crime. Barongo was rescued from an angry mob by police and is currently held at Embakasi police station facing murder charges. Joy’s body has been taken to the city mortuary for an autopsy.
