Machakos Level 5 Hospital to Refuse Dead Bodies from Neighbouring Counties

The Machakos Level 5 Hospital has announced its decision to no longer accept deceased individuals from neighbouring counties, as conveyed by County CECM Health Dr. Daniel Yumbya.

Following his visit to the facility on Saturday, Yumbya issued a warning to police in neighbouring counties, cautioning against bringing dead bodies from their jurisdictions to the Machakos hospital.

Yumbya accused the police of transporting bodies from accident scenes on Mombasa Road to the Machakos facility, a practice that he argued would lead to congestion at the hospital. He emphasized that only bodies collected within Machakos County would be accepted and retained at the hospital.

The county CECM highlighted that upon Governor Wavinya Ndeti taking office, the morgue faced congestion with 62 unclaimed bodies, mostly collected by police from accident scenes and others dumped, originating mainly from Thika, Kiambu, Kajiado, Makueni, Kitui, and other counties. This situation prompted a court order for the disposal of bodies to alleviate congestion.

Yumbya refuted claims of the hospital mortuary being closed, clarifying that it underwent renovations, which have now been completed. Additionally, he contested assertions of insufficient medicine at the health facility.

During the tour of the Level 5 facility on Saturday, Yumbya was accompanied by several CECMs and hospital managers.
