Kenyans consumed a record 414,861 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2024, representing a 15 percent increase from 360,594 tonnes in 2023, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reported.
The growth has been attributed to government incentives such as the zero-rating of LPG, which has lowered prices and expanded access to households across the country.

“LPG consumption rose significantly, climbing 15% from 360,594 metric tonnes in 2023 to 414,861 metric tonnes in 2024,” EPRA noted in its annual review.
The upward trend is expected to continue under the National LPG Growth Strategy, which seeks to make LPG the main cooking fuel, reduce dependence on biomass, and promote environmental sustainability.
Among the key goals are doubling per capita LPG use from 7.5 kg in 2021 to 15 kg by 2030, expanding access in underserved areas, and strengthening distribution through affordability measures and better infrastructure.
Planned investments include a Common User Facility (CUF) to cut supply chain costs, adoption of LPG in schools and hospitals, incentives for low-income families, and stricter safety regulations.
Per capita LPG consumption rose to 7.9 kg in 2024, up from 7.0 kg the previous year, signalling a steady transition to cleaner cooking energy.
