The power utility typically issues such notices in advance to allow customers to prepare accordingly and minimize disruptions.
The affected areas will be without electricity from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In Kisumu, the outage will impact Kona Legio, Kona Mbaya, Manyatta Market, Kisumu Polytechnic, Sije, Mbeme Junction, and nearby areas.
In Kakamega, areas to be affected include Musanda Market, Bungatsi, Navakholo Market, Huchisi Market, Stigume, Matawe, and surrounding locations.
Reasons Behind Planned Power Interruptions
Kenya Power carries out both scheduled and unscheduled outages for various purposes. Planned outages are mainly for maintenance, system upgrades, and the connection of new customers, all aimed at improving power reliability and efficiency.
Additionally, infrastructure projects like roadworks may necessitate the relocation or replacement of power lines, leading to temporary disruptions with prior notifications.
Unscheduled outages, however, often result from unexpected equipment failures, system faults, or external factors beyond the company’s control.
These may include vandalism, adverse weather conditions such as strong winds and storms, or even wildlife interference. In one notable incident in June 2016, a monkey caused a nationwide blackout after tampering with equipment at the Gitaru Power Station, triggering a cascade failure that led to a loss of over 180 megawatts of power.
