Kisii: Residents Decline to Bury a Villager Who Did Not Participate in Village activities

A church in Kisii had to step in to facilitate the burial of a villager whose body had been in the morgue for three weeks. This came about as inhabitants of Mokongonyoni village in Nyakoe ward, Kisii County, refused to assist in the funeral arrangements for the late Linet Kerubo, citing her lack of involvement in village activities during her lifetime.

At the age of 33, Kerubo passed away while residing with her mother, Elmelda Otora, who, notably, was actively engaged in local affairs, particularly those related to funerals.

According to established customs among the Abagusii community, individuals who live with their parents, regardless of age, and whose parents are active participants in village matters, are considered to be actively involved as well.

However, the residents of Mokongonyoni held a different perspective. Kisii-based journalist Rogers Gichana reports that they argued the deceased was over 18 years old and should have actively participated in village affairs.

Gichana explains that it was necessary for Nyamataro PAG church, where the deceased’s mother is a member, to intervene and cover the mortuary expenses for the burial to proceed.

The burial is now underway under the church’s guidance.

“It’s quite unusual. After the residents realized the church had taken action, they wanted to take charge of the burial arrangements, but the church declined. They had deserted this family when they needed support the most,” remarked Gichana.
