Kirinyaga County Gov’t Initiates Rapid Road Rehabilitation in Flood-Damaged Areas

Governor Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga County has announced a swift response to the infrastructure challenges brought about by recent floods.

The county has launched a rapid road rehabilitation initiative aimed at restoring the transportation network damaged during heavy rains in April and May.

The initiative, introduced by Governor Waiguru, entails grading and murraming rural access roads that sustained significant damage from the floodwaters. Governor Waiguru emphasized the commitment of her administration to allocate resources necessary for the rehabilitation work until the project’s completion.

Recognizing the pivotal role of a reliable transport network in agricultural development, Governor Waiguru underscored the urgency of restoring the damaged roads to ensure seamless movement of farm produce to markets.

She expressed determination to collaborate closely with relevant teams to expedite the rehabilitation process and minimize inconvenience to residents.

Under the “Nyorosha Barabara Mashinani Program,” which has already graded over 700 kilometers and murramed approximately 300 kilometers of roads across the county in the past year, the affected roads will undergo rehabilitation.

Most of the damaged roads are located in Mutiithi, Tebere, Thiba, Wamumu, Gathigiriri, Kariti, Kangai, and Nyangati wards, which were severely affected by the recent floods.

Rehabilitation efforts have already commenced, with over 10 kilometers of roads graded in Mutithi ward last week. Jinaro Njamumo, the Area Member of the County Assembly (MCA), highlighted the necessity of rehabilitating roads to ensure the smooth transportation of agricultural produce to markets, particularly in areas where roads had become inaccessible due to flooding.

Local residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing relief that the road rehabilitation program will enhance mobility for both people and goods. Francis Kariuki, a dairy farmer, expressed gratitude for the swift action, noting that improved roads would significantly benefit residents by facilitating easier access to essential services and markets.

Mugo Kaniu, an elder in the area, emphasized the positive impact of improved infrastructure on local farmers, making it easier for them to access markets.

Similarly, Margaret Kagwe highlighted the importance of improved roads in ensuring safe transportation to healthcare facilities, particularly for women during childbirth, thereby addressing longstanding challenges posed by inadequate road networks.
