Detectives at the home of Brian Mwenda--a boda boda rider--suspected of involvement in murder of Meru-based blogger Sniper on Sunday, January 7.

Key Suspect Arrested in Murder of Meru Blogger ‘Sniper’ as DCI Detectives Conduct Forensic Raid

Detectives from the Homicide Department at DCI Headquarters, led by Director Martin Nyuguto, apprehended a crucial suspect in the murder case of Meru-based blogger Daniel Muthiani Bernard, also known as Sniper.

Acting on a tip-off from the public, the investigators conducted a raid at the residence of Brian Mwenda, a boda boda rider, situated on the outskirts of Gachanka Village in the Ntima East division of North Imenti constituency on Sunday.

During the operation that lasted over four hours, forensic evidence was gathered at Mwenda’s rented home to assist in the ongoing murder investigation of Sniper. According to detectives, Mwenda and other suspects are currently in custody, scheduled to be arraigned at Kiambu Law Courts on Monday.

This arrest follows a previous operation on Saturday, where DCI detectives cordoned off the residence of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza in Milimani estate, aligning with the investigation into the murder of blogger Daniel Muthiani alias Sniper. Top leaders, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki, have condemned Sniper’s killing, promising decisive action against those involved.

Additionally, the DCI is seeking a 21-day remand for five suspects already in custody, namely Kenneth Mutua Gatiri (alias Gasigi), Fredrick Muruiki Kiugi (alias Pope), Frankline Kimathi (alias Dudu Ras), Timothy Kinoti (alias Timo), and Murangiri Kenneth Guantai (alias Tali). The investigators argue that this timeframe will facilitate the completion of their inquiry, citing the possibility of more arrests.

The suspects are accused of luring Sniper through a phone call, claiming that Governor Mwangaza wished to meet him. Sniper went missing on December 2, and his body was discovered on December 16, 2023. A post-mortem examination revealed that he died from strangulation, exhibiting signs of oxygen deprivation, fractured ribs, and other injuries.
