In a statement released on Wednesday, the Red Cross shared that they had established a triage post at Riatha Mosque to offer immediate medical assistance.

“This morning, Kenya Red Cross first responders attended to 37 casualties in Majengo, Nairobi, after protests. Two critically injured individuals were evacuated by @EMS_Kenya to Kenyatta National Hospital, while one was taken to Pumwani Maternity. Our teams set up a triage post at Riatha Mosque for immediate medical help,” the statement read.

The protests erupted after demonstrators set fire to police houses in response to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy during a police operation.

The group also torched two police vehicles, attacked the area chief’s office, and blocked roads, shouting “Allah Akbar” slogans.

The unrest began around 6 a.m. when a group of protesters left a mosque, quickly spreading to Gikomba Market as police struggled to control the situation.

According to the police, the shooting occurred the night before at Majengo Social Hall during a confrontation between undercover officers and a group of youths.

The officers had been pursuing a young man suspected of carrying cannabis but were overwhelmed by a larger group of youths who intervened.

The officers reportedly fired warning shots in an attempt to defend themselves, during which the 17-year-old was shot. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police also confirmed that the two officers were injured after being pelted with stones and attacked with crude weapons.

Kamkunji MP Yusuf Hassan called for an investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and condemned the death of the teenager, identified as Ramadhan Chege.

Tensions remained high in Majengo.
