The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has reported that ongoing protests against the Finance Bill have resulted in significant casualties and injuries.
According to KNCHR, as of July 1, 2024, at least 39 individuals have lost their lives, and 361 others have been injured across the country.
In a statement released on Monday, KNCHR emphasized the responsibility of duty bearers to address these human rights violations. KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede highlighted that a majority of the deceased have yet to undergo postmortem examinations.
The protests, initially peaceful at their outset on June 18, turned violent by June 25, resulting in numerous fatalities, injuries, and property damage.
KNCHR noted specific casualty figures from various regions, including Nairobi (17 deaths), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (1), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (1), Kisumu (2), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1), and Nandi (1).
Odede expressed concern over additional incidents such as enforced disappearances, arrests of protestors, and threats to the safety of individuals in hiding. She condemned the excessive use of force against demonstrators, medical personnel, lawyers, journalists, and sanctuaries like churches and ambulances.
KNCHR also documented the destruction of government infrastructure, including a National Library, a County Court in Eldoret, and governmental offices in Nairobi, alongside acts of violence targeting politicians in various regions.
In response, KNCHR urged protestors to exercise their rights responsibly under Article 37 of the Constitution, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law and respecting the rights of others.
The Commission called for a lawful deployment of security forces and pledged to monitor compliance closely.
Overall, KNCHR underscored the government’s obligation to protect protestors’ rights while maintaining law and order, stressing the need for restraint and adherence to constitutional obligations.
