Kenya Finally Pays KSh 3.9B to Secure AFCON 2027 Hosting

After weeks of uncertainty, Kenya has completed payment of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting fee, totaling USD 30 million (KSh 3.9 billion), the Sports Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.

In a statement, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the payment means Kenya has now met all financial and institutional obligations required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“Kenya has fully met its obligations to CAF, marking a key step toward co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” Mvurya said.

He noted that the government has restructured the Multi-Agency Local Organizing Committee (LOC), combining public and private sector expertise to enhance capacity ahead of the tournament.

Questions remain over the LOC leadership, with reports suggesting that long-serving CEO Mike Rabar may have left his position. The Ministry is yet to officially confirm the changes, which are expected to be gazetted soon.

Following CAF’s recent inspection, Kenya is moving into an accelerated implementation phase. This includes fast-tracking stadium construction and upgrades, improving training facilities, and enhancing transport infrastructure in line with CAF’s recommendations.

Mvurya said the payment highlights the government’s commitment to promoting Kenya as a top global sporting destination while using the tournament to drive economic growth, youth empowerment, and job creation.

“As part of the regional Pamoja bid, Kenya is dedicated to delivering a world-class AFCON experience,” he added, noting that partner countries will meet next month to finalize a harmonized framework for visa processing and customs facilitation.
