Kamiti Prison Warden Arrested while Protesting at Parliament

A Kamiti prison warden known as Cop Shakur on social media was arrested on Tuesday while demonstrating outside the Parliament Building.

Videos circulating online depicted him in a blood-stained white dustcoat, holding a sign demanding justice for those who died in recent anti-tax protests.

Part of his placard read, “We want justice, not your condolences.”

Accompanied by supporters amidst rainfall, the warden from Kamiti Medium Prison attempted to access the Senate gate, where security officials engaged in a confrontation with him to block access to the area, which has been heavily guarded since protesters breached it on June 25.

After a brief struggle, additional police arrived, forcibly detained him, and tore his coat during the arrest, citing the illegality of his protest.

Identified later as Jackson Kuria Kihara alias Shakur, a Kamiti Medium Prison warden, he was taken to Parliament police cells. Police are investigating and plan to consult prison authorities for more information.

Later, he was transferred to Central Police Station in preparation for arraignment.

Protests over the dropped Finance Bill 2024, which resulted in over 42 deaths, numerous arrests, and injuries to over 400, continue to challenge authorities.
