The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has promoted 117 magistrates across different levels, in a move aimed at boosting the country’s judicial capacity and improving access to justice.
The promotions, which were confirmed during commission meetings on September 11 and 15, 2025, followed interviews held between August 4 and 13, 2025. They take effect immediately, according to a Thursday press release.

Among those promoted, nine magistrates have risen to the rank of Chief Magistrate. They include Kimilu Esther Kalunde, Rotich Paul Kipkosgei, Macharia James Muriuki, Wambilyanga Joane Namrome, Kituku Justus Mulei, Ireri Benson Nyaga, Ooko Peter Oduor, Magori Jared Ogoti, and Kayila Dolphina Atieno Alego.
Sixty-seven others were promoted to Senior Principal Magistrate, marking the largest group advancement in this phase. Six magistrates were also elevated to Principal Magistrate, including Shimenga Maureen Iberia, Bii Japheth Cheruiyot, Nyamu Janette Wandia, Ochanda Victoria Achieng, Agutu Christabel Irene, and Kitur Wilson Kipchumba.
In the Kadhi courts, 15 officers advanced to Senior Principal Kadhi, while 20 others rose to Principal Kadhi.
The JSC said the promotions are part of a wider strategy to expand judicial officers’ territorial and pecuniary jurisdiction, enabling them to handle more complex and higher-value cases. The move also seeks to reward outstanding performance and promote career growth within the Judiciary.
Commission Secretary Winfridah Mokaya congratulated the officers, noting that the promotions reflect both professional excellence and the JSC’s dedication to strengthening the rule of law, accountability, and service delivery.
The promotions are expected to enhance efficiency and reinforce the Judiciary’s role in delivering justice nationwide.
