Police in Kericho County have opened investigations after a suspected mass grave was discovered at Makaburini Cemetery.
A multi-agency team moved in after members of the public alerted authorities on Saturday, March 21, 2026, about the alarming find. Initial reports suggest the presence of a recently dug grave believed to contain several bodies, some allegedly mutilated.

Two casual labourers who work at the cemetery told investigators they had been hired by unknown individuals to dig a large grave. According to their account, three people arrived in a white Land Cruiser on the morning of March 20 and supervised the dumping of about 14 bodies into the pit. The bodies were reportedly packed in bags, with some showing signs of disfigurement.
The witnesses also claimed the same individuals had visited the site a day earlier and held talks with a caretaker identified as Ezekiel, who is now being sought by police for questioning.
Authorities have since secured the area as they prepare to begin the exhumation process, expected to start on March 23 once the necessary court orders are obtained. Detectives from the DCI headquarters in Nairobi have joined local officers to support the investigation.
Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri said officers are still verifying the claims, noting that some witnesses have already recorded statements while efforts continue to identify and question other persons of interest.

He assured the public that the case is being handled with seriousness, professionalism, and transparency, urging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station or use official hotlines.
Investigations are ongoing to identify the victims, determine what led to the incident, and track down those responsible. Cases involving bodies being dumped in isolated areas have been reported before, but this latest discovery remains under active probe.
